Documentation

n8n-nodes-anonymizer

This is an n8n community node that provides privacy-preserving PII anonymization for LLM integrations using the Proxy Sandwich pattern.

It anonymizes Personally Identifiable Information (PII) before sending text to LLMs and restores original values afterward, ensuring sensitive data never reaches external APIs.

n8n is a fair-code licensed workflow automation platform.

Operations

Anonymize

Detects and replaces PII with tokenized placeholders. Supports both plain text and JSON input.

Detected entity types:

Entity Detection Method Validation
Email Regex RFC 5322
Credit Card Regex Luhn checksum
IBAN Regex ISO 13616 mod-97
DNI (Spain) Regex Letter mod-23
Phone Regex Digit count heuristic
IP Address Regex Octet range
Person Name NLP (compromise) Length + stopword filter
Organization NLP (compromise) Length + stopword filter
Location NLP (compromise) Length + stopword filter

Example:

  • Input: "Contact John at john@example.com"
  • Output text: "Contact {{NAME_1}} at {{EMAIL_1}}"
  • Output vault: {"{{NAME_1}}": "John", "{{EMAIL_1}}": "john@example.com"}

Restore

Replaces anonymized tokens back with original values using the Mapping Vault from the Anonymize step.

Usage (Proxy Sandwich Pattern)

  1. Anonymizer (Anonymize) → receives user text, outputs anonymized text + vault
  2. LLM Node (GPT, Claude, etc.) → processes anonymized text
  3. Anonymizer (Restore) → receives LLM response + vault, outputs restored text

The LLM never sees real PII. The user gets fully contextualized output.
