n8n-nodes-cliptoframe

This is an n8n community node for ClipToFrame — a hosted API that extracts still frames and metadata from video URLs.

Because all video processing happens on ClipToFrame's servers, this node works on n8n Cloud and any self-hosted instance — no FFmpeg installation needed.

n8n is a fair-code licensed workflow automation platform.

Installation

n8n GUI (recommended)

  1. Go to Settings > Community Nodes.
  2. Select Install.
  3. Enter n8n-nodes-cliptoframe and confirm.

Follow the community nodes installation guide for details.

Manual (self-hosted)

cd ~/.n8n/nodes # your n8n custom nodes directory
npm install n8n-nodes-cliptoframe

Restart n8n afterwards.

Credentials

  1. Sign up at cliptoframe.com — the free tier includes 100 requests/month, no card required.
  2. Create an API key at cliptoframe.com/dashboard/api.
  3. In n8n, create a ClipToFrame API credential and paste the key.

The node sends the key in the x-api-key header and handles the API's required Origin header automatically.

Operations

All operations live under the single Video resource.

Operation Endpoint What it does
Extract Frame POST /capture Captures one still image from a public video URL at a given timestamp. Returns a hosted image URL (retained 30 days) plus metadata (format, file size, processing time).
Extract Frames (Batch) POST /capture/batch Captures 1–10 frames in a single request. Returns per-frame results; partial failures are reported per item, not as a request failure. Optionally split results into separate n8n items.
Get Video Info POST /video/info Probes a video URL and returns duration, container format, size, bitrate, and video/audio stream details — without processing the whole file.

Extract Frame parameters

Parameter Default Notes
Video URL — Public http(s) URL, e.g. https://cliptoframe.com/samples/demo.mp4
Time (Seconds) 0 Timestamp to capture at
Output Format jpg jpg, jpeg, png, or webp
Quality 85 1–100
Max Width / Max Height — Optional downscaling, aspect ratio preserved

API errors are surfaced with both the human-readable message and the machine-readable code (e.g. VIDEO_URL_INVALID, RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED) so you can branch on them with an Error Trigger or continueOnFail.

Example workflow

Generate a thumbnail whenever a new video lands in your system:

  1. Webhook (or any trigger) receives a payload containing a video URL.
  2. ClipToFrame > Get Video Info reads the duration.
  3. ClipToFrame > Extract Frame captures a frame at 25% of the duration ({{ $json.info.durationSeconds * 0.25 }}) as WebP with maxWidth: 640.
  4. Use the returned imageUrl downstream — post to Slack, save to Airtable, attach to a CMS entry, etc.

Compatibility

  • Requires n8n 1.x (tested against recent 1.x releases).
  • Works on n8n Cloud and self-hosted instances; no binaries or system dependencies.
