Installation
Community node (n8n UI)
- In n8n, go to Settings → Community Nodes.
- Click Install a community node.
- Enter
n8n-nodes-convertintomp4and confirm.
See the n8n community nodes documentation for details and requirements (self-hosted n8n only).
Manual (self-hosted)
cd ~/.n8n/nodes
npm install n8n-nodes-convertintomp4
Restart n8n afterwards.
Credentials
- Create a free account at convertintomp4.com.
- Generate an API key (starts with
ck_) at https://convertintomp4.com/account/api/keys. - In n8n, create a ConvertIntoMP4 API credential and paste the key. The key is sent via the
X-Api-Keyheader.
Operations
Convert File
Converts a file to a target format. Two input sources:
- Binary File — uploads binary data from a previous node (
POST /v1/convert, multipart). - URL — the API downloads the source file from a public URL (
POST /v1/import/url).
Set Target Format to the desired output extension — common options: mp4, webm, mov, mkv, gif, mp3, wav, m4a, flac, jpg, png, webp, avif, pdf, docx, xlsx, epub, zip. The full format matrix is on the API docs.
Optional conversion settings: quality, resolution, CRF, encoder preset, video/audio bitrate, image quality, width/height, FPS, and engine pinning.
Wait for Completion (default on) polls the job status until it finishes, with a configurable Timeout and Poll Interval. When the job completes, the output includes result.downloadUrl (absolute URL) plus output size and processing duration. Turn it off to get the queued job back immediately and check on it later with Get Job Status.
Get Job Status
Fetches the current status of a conversion job by ID (GET /v1/status/<jobId>): status, progress, queue position while waiting, and the download URL once completed.
Usage examples
1. Extract MP3 audio from an uploaded video
Turn meeting or podcast videos into audio files (MP4 to MP3):
- Any node that outputs binary data (e.g. Read/Write Files from Disk, HTTP Request, Google Drive).
- ConvertIntoMP4 → Operation: Convert File, Input Source: Binary File, Target Format:
mp3. - The node waits for completion and returns
downloadUrl— feed it into an HTTP Request node (no auth needed, the job ID acts as the access token) to fetch the audio, or store the URL.
2. Convert a file from a URL — no upload step
Convert iPhone footage hosted anywhere to web-friendly MP4 (MOV to MP4):
- ConvertIntoMP4 → Operation: Convert File, Input Source: URL, File URL:
https://example.com/clip.mov, Target Format:mp4. - Optionally set Resolution (
1280x720) or CRF to control output size/quality. - Downstream nodes get the finished job JSON including the absolute
downloadUrl.
3. Fire-and-forget with a later status check
For long videos (e.g. MP4 to GIF of a large screen recording), don't block the workflow:
- ConvertIntoMP4 → Convert File with Wait for Completion disabled — returns
jobIdimmediately. - Continue with other work, or add a Wait node.
- ConvertIntoMP4 → Get Job Status with
{{ $json.jobId }}— loop untilstatusiscompleted, then usedownloadUrl.
Notes
- Converted files are kept for a limited retention window (shown in the job status/download responses) and then auto-deleted — download the output promptly or export it from your workflow.
- Usage quotas and rate limits depend on your ConvertIntoMP4 plan — see the API docs.
- Popular conversion pages: MP4 to MP3, MOV to MP4, MP4 to GIF.
- Measured conversion performance: benchmark reports.
Compatibility
Requires n8n version 1.x (community nodes with n8nNodesApiVersion 1) and Node.js >= 18.10.
