Summary

Update an existing category in Lunch Money by specifying its ID and providing new values for its properties such as name, description, income status, budget exclusion, and others.

Inputs

• Category ID (required) — The ID of the category to update.
• Name — New name for the category (1–100 characters).
• Description — Description of the category (max 200 characters).
• Is Income — Whether transactions in this category are treated as income.
• Exclude From Budget — Whether transactions in this category are excluded from the budget.
• Exclude From Totals — Whether transactions in this category are excluded from totals.
• Group ID — ID of the category group this category belongs to.
• Archived — Whether the category is archived.
• Order — Display order of the category (null means alphabetical).
• Collapsed — Whether the category is collapsed in the GUI.
• Children — Array of child category IDs for category groups.

Output shape

a single updated category object representing the modified category

The updated category is returned as the API response to the PUT request to /categories/{id}. Optional fields may be included if provided; otherwise, they remain unchanged.

Examples

Example 1: Update category name and mark it as income

Provide the category ID, set a new name (e.g., 'Salary'), and set Is Income to true.
